Agrigento |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Founded
as a Greek colony in the 6th century BC, Agrigento became one
of the leading cities of the Mediterranean world. Universally known for the spectacular Valley of
Temples and the sacred area of ancient Akragas, one of the most important colonies of
the Greek Empire.
Seen
from
Agrigento, the ancient Akragas, offers an absolutely exceptional
panorama: opposite to the modern city we can find the Valley of Temples,
majestic and full of flowers, one of the most interesting and evocative
archaeological areas in the whole Mediterranean.
The
temples of Concord, Hera, Zeus, Hercules, Castor and Pollux follow one
another in an archaeological promenade which is unique in the world and
bears witness to the past splendour of this city, which was among the most
magnificent and powerful of the antiquity.

The Archaeological Museum is rich in finds dating from that time.In addition to its archaeological area, Agrigento is also interesting for its historic town center, in which the Cathedral founded by the Norman (11th century) and the Santo Spirito church dating back to the 12th are particularly interesting. One can also visit the church of S. Maria dei Greci, built in the 7th century on the foundations of a Greek temple dedicated to Athena and the house of the writer and playwright Luigi Pirandello, which is now a museum.
From
December to February the flowering almond-trees give the "Valley of
the Temples"
a special glamour and an unusual charm.
