Zafferana Etnea |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Situated on Mount Etna, 600 meters above the sea level and 23 Km away from Catania and Taormina, Zafferana Etnea (8500 inhabitants), is the tourist destination the whole year: vacationers and lovers of cultural events in the summer, nature-loving people in the intermediate seasons and skiers (in the skilifts of Etna) in the winter. The 500 beds that the hotels of Zafferana Etnea offer, proves its tourist vocation.
We
begin our visit from the Umberto Central Square, from which opens a
look-out that borders the public gardens. Here you can enjoy an amazing
view that ranges over Calabria and Syracuse. In front of the square rise
up the nineteenth century Municipal Palace in Liberty style. At its side
stands the majestic Mother Church in Sicilian Baroque style. Also worth a
visit the nearby Church of Madonna delle Grazie, in front of wich stands
the Town Park with its nice alleys full with flowers.

Zafferana is an excellent starting point for the trips in the Park of Etna: from Pomiciaro Mountain to Calanna Valley, from the Valley of the Bove to the woodland craters, from the central crater to the sheet of cooled lava when, in 1992, the lava stopped at a small distance from the inhabited center.
